By way of explanation. The term 'home business' consists of two words. 'Business' is the second one; it's there to qualify and support the word 'home' and all that goes with it - and not vice versa. Consequently, we also list below, items which are of interest and value to the home. Whether in its context as an office or as a part of your family and lifestyle but always directed at the improved prospects and enjoyment that running a business from home, in its entirety, can bring.

For a current, multi-part overview of starting and running a business from home, go here: http://www.homebusiness.org.uk/features.htm

Brexit Bullshit Latest: https://truepublica.org.uk/united-kingdom/weekly-news-review-20th-26th-september/

Agriculture: Some good news for once. The government has been heavily defeated in the Lords over a cross-party move to guarantee high food standards post-Brexit. “Peers backed by a majority of 95 a change to the Agriculture Bill aimed at blocking the import of foodstuffs produced abroad at lower animal welfare standards. Voting was 307 to 212 for an amendment requiring food products imported under future trade deals to meet or exceed domestic standards, to prevent U.K. farmers from being undermined.” When the bill gets back to the House of Commons, MPs will have to vote on whether to take the amendment out. If they do, and that looks increasingly likely, that would further limit a US/UK trade deal. This Bill only goes to show what the Tories have in mind, simply by passing it first time around in the Commons and presenting it to the Lords in the first place.

Deal or No Deal: The U.K. is no longer concerned the EU could block food exports if trade talks fail. It appears both sides have agreed terms and have moved on in the Brexit talks. EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier told British negotiators last week that it would have no issue getting “third country listing” for food exports. The negotiating teams have now closed round 8 – round 9 next week is starting on a more positive note. As it turns out, there are still bottlenecks in getting a deal – but some rumours are emerging, for the first time in ages, that a deal is now in sight – time will tell.

Banking: JPMorgan is moving about $230 billion from the U.K. to Frankfurt as a result of Brexit, a shift that will make it one of the largest banks in Germany. In January, the bank had also announced its significant expansion into Paris as part of plans to relocate some services from London after Brexit. Brexit has now caused something like $1trillion in cash and assets in the banking industry to be moved from the UK to the EU in preparedness for January 1st (source)

Red Tape: Some 51% of companies had not taken any steps recommended by the government to prepare for changes in the trade of goods, a new survey showed, with little more than three months to go before a shift in the terms of trade with the European Union. Britain told businesses on Wednesday to prepare for paperwork or face 100 km-long queues of lorries when the country’s post-Brexit transition arrangement ends. Even Reuters news agency reports that this had “prompted accusations that the government was setting up the industry to take the blame for any chaos from a botched Brexit” (source).

Kent Border: Brexit just keeps on serving up gems. Michael Gove has had to admit for the first time that police will now need to enforce a need for trucks to have a ‘Kent access permit’ at what is really a de-facto border. Gove said officers will use automatic number plate recognition cameras and “other means” to block drivers. Gove also admitted an expectation of 7,000-long lorry queues and two-day delays to cross the Channel. Just wait for the headlines as police start arresting British truckers for not having the permit. Many national papers are reporting that furious hauliers said they were being lined up to take the blame for the looming disruption (source).

Gibraltar Border: Another border now appears, this time we are informed by the Deputy Chief Minister of Gibraltar who explains how it will have to erect new border restrictions against goods coming from the UK in the event of no deal. Trucks will need to go through and then return through a border control post. In a rather bizarre statement, the Minister accuses Spain of using the border as a ‘weapon’ – probably because it is ready, whereas Gibraltar and Britain is not (source).

Rights Bonfire: Stormont passes a motion telling the government to implement the N.I. protocol in full and not undermine international law with its Internal Markets Bill. This, of course, means that if it passes the government will be breaching the principles of consent enshrined in the Good Friday Agreement. Sinn Fien’s Martina Anderson said “The Northern Ireland protocol was “an ugly compromise” which “mitigated” the worst effects of Brexit, she said, adding that it was “breathtaking” the scale of the damage done to lives and livelihoods by this “Brexit mess”. She said British ministers had “expressed an interest in lighting a bonfire under hard-won rights”, and urged the EU and the Irish Government to “stand firm” in defence of the peace process in opposition to the UK government’s “increasingly reckless” actions (READ MORE). Expect more trouble over this as the days continue.

Abandoning Brits Abroad: UK high street lenders have been accused of “outrageously failing” British expats living in Europe following reports last week that they would be shutting down their accounts after the UK leaves the EU at the start of 2021. “Most of the UK’s high street banks are plotting to unceremoniously abandon their customers across Europe within weeks,” says Nigel Green, the CEO and founder of deVere Group. “Once again, traditional banks are outrageously failing their clients.” It was reported Lloyds, Barclays and Coutts (Nat West) are among amongst those UK banks that have started giving notice to expatriate customers to say they will close their accounts at 11 pm on December 31 (source).

27.09.2020: New package to support and enforce self-isolation. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-package-to-support-and-enforce-self-isolation People who are required by law to self-isolate from 28 September will receive a payment of £500. The payment will be available to people receiving benefits who cannot work from home and have lost income as a result.

Data protection guidance for collecting customer information. https://ico.org.uk/about-the-ico/news-and-events/news-and-blogs/2020/09/data-protection-guidance-for-collecting-customer-information/ The Information Commissioner's Office has published guidance about how to legally collect, use and store customer and visitor information. Since 18 September 2020 it is now mandatory for all businesses in the hospitality, tourism and leisure sectors to collect customer and visitor information as part of the Government's test and trace programme. Close-contact businesses, such as beauty therapists, will also be required to collect customer information.

25.09.2020: Chancellor announces new business support measures

On 24 September, the Chancellor announced a package of measures to protect jobs and support businesses across the UK. The measures include:

Job Support Scheme. Under the scheme, the Government will contribute towards the wages of employees who are working at least 33% of their usual hours due to decreased demand. The scheme will start on 1 November 2020 and run for six months.

Self-employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS). Two additional grant payments will be made under the SEISS. The first grant worth up to £1,875 will be paid to those currently eligible for SEISS to cover the period from 1 November 2020 to 31 January 2021. The second grant will be available for the period from February to the end of April 2021 and be dependent on business circumstance.

Tax deferrals. Self-assessment tax payments that were deferred from July 2020 and payments due in January 2021 will not need to be paid until January 2022. Businesses will also be able to pay their VAT bill in 11 smaller instalments during 2021/22 rather than in one lump sum at the end of March 2021. The temporary 15% VAT cut for the tourism and hospitality sectors will also be extended until 31 March 2021.

Business Loans. Under a Pay as You Grow repayment system for the Bounce Back Loan Scheme the duration of loans will be extended from six to ten years. Interest-only periods and payment holidays will also be available. Lenders will also be able to extend the duration of the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme from six to ten years. Applications for the coronavirus loan schemes will be extended until the end of November 2020.

Brexit Bullshit Update. https://truepublica.org.uk/united-kingdom/weekly-news-review-13th-19th-september/ Crushing Blow: Logistics UK says it learned this week that the Smart Freight System being developed by the government for handling cross-border trade won’t be ready for January 1st. Policy director Elizabeth de Jong says it’s a “crushing disappointment and “a massive blow to UK businesses and the economy.” Logistics UK expressed “dismay” at the revelation that the system will not be tested until April 2021. “To find out with only 14 weeks to go, that there will not be a ready workable solution for those moving goods to the EU is a massive blow to UK businesses and to the economy … and to protect the UK’s supply chain” (READ MORE).

Gibraltar: The Spanish government is pushing for Gibraltar to join the passport-free Schengen zone after the Brexit transition period, which Britain itself will not be part of. The British government, which handles the foreign affairs of the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, is expected to respond to the proposal in two to three weeks’ time, according to EU officials. The idea is part of Spain’s strategy of “shared responsibility” with the U.K. over the Rock’s affairs after Brexit. Madrid argues that 97 per cent of people in Gibraltar voted Remain in 2016, and that means tailored solutions should be found to allow Gibraltar to continue to benefit from as many EU policies as possible, with freedom of movement being one of the priorities. Without freedom of movement – Gibrater will become a real political battleground. The proposal has the backing of Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo (source).

Auto Warning: Europe and Britain’s car industries called on Monday on the two sides to urgently clinch a free trade agreement, warning that a disorderly Brexit would cost the sector 110 billion euros (£101.79 billion) in lost trade over the next five years. Failure to secure a deal would lead to tariffs. That would make vehicles more expensive and cause a drop in demand that could eliminate the production of 3 million vehicles over the next five years, 23 auto industry associations said in a joint statement on Monday (source).

Luxembourg’s Big Brexit Win: British financial firms are close to losing their “passporting rights” that allow companies in EU member states to service clients across the bloc. The consequence is that many UK based financial services companies are leaving for Dublin, Frankfurt, Paris, and Amsterdam. But the biggest winner so far is Luxembourg. 275 firms in the U.K. have already moved or are moving some of their business, staff, assets, or legal entities from the U.K. to the EU in preparation for Brexit. Around 250 of those companies chose specific “post-Brexit hubs” for their EU business. While Dublin ranked No. 1 with around 100 relocations, Luxembourg scored a solid second. The population of Luxembourg is just 600,000 – so they stand to see a huge cash injection into their economy (source).

Brexit Bullshit Update: https://truepublica.org.uk/united-kingdom/weekly-news-review-6th-12th-september/

Poker stakes: For all of the noise coming from Downing Street over the FT’s article over the Withdrawal Agreement – don’t forget that Boris Johnson is a poor poker player. The question is – is Johnson serious over walking away if he doesn’t get what he wants? On October 7th last year No10 sent a bombshell text message to the Spectator Magazine claiming the talks were about to end for good as they’d had enough of intransigence from the EU (source). “They think we’re bluffing and there’s nothing we can do about that… We’ll either leave with no deal on 31 October… we will wash our hands of it, we won’t engage in further talks … everything to do with ‘duty of sincere cooperation’ will be in the toilet.” Three days later, a deal was reached. That deal was Theresa May’s deal with some changes that ended with the Northern Ireland Protocol and lots of fanfare that Johnson has saved the day. The financial markets don’t believe Johnson this time, nor does the EU and now, nor do many of his own party.

Follow the Money: Bloomberg writes an interesting article about Brexit by pointing out that international currency traders no longer believe Boris Johnson’s government. “Yet Johnson is setting Oct. 15 as a deadline to reach a deal, while also apparently promising to rip up the last one. This is crazy, as my colleague Therese Raphael puts it, not to say breathtakingly reckless, and downright stupid.” Bloomberg quotes traders as saying – “traders appear to have decided that Boris Johnson’s threats don’t need to be taken seriously” – the consequence is that Sterling remained stable (when it should have quickly weakened) because they are now backing against what Johnson is saying. They stand to make significant losses if Johnson does take Britain over the cliff (source).

Cliff-Edge: There is ‘plummeting trust in Boris Johnson” as EU diplomatic cables leaked to the Guardian’s Daniel Boffey: “Johnson is suspected of holding back on finding a compromise on the key outstanding issues of fisheries, state aid and dispute resolution until the last moment in order to achieve a last-minute trade-off.” Apparently, the European Commission “fears Downing Street is behind a barrage of anti-EU articles in the British press, citing reports accusing Brussels of intransigence directly ahead of the last round of talks” (source).

Can the WTO be saved: Brexiteers keep banging on about how great Britain will be outside of the EU. Boris Johnson has this week declared Britain will ‘prosper mightily’ without a deal. All of them cite the fact that the UK can simply trade on WTO rules. But there’s a problem. As the World Trade Organization selects a new director-general this month, the Geneva-based group will be faced with two acute challenges: There is not a great deal of support for trade outside of trade deals, and there is even less support for the WTO itself. There are many reasons for this, not least – “For its part, the WTO is faulted for its inability to complete a trade round. To put it politely, the WTO is not designed for success.” The WTO is really a place where decades ago, countries needed to reach common ground over trade. Today, they do that through global trade deals not via the WTO (READ MORE).

Truth Hurts: Billionaires Sir James Dyson and Sir James Ratcliffe, the latter of chemical giant Ineos, are two of Britain’s big business Brexiteers, where both made grand plans in the motoring space to return the UK to its former glory in the year following Brexit. However, with news that Ineos is moving its reported Grenadier 4×4 project to France, and Dyson having pulled the plug on his own electric vehicle dreams last October, the reality of Brexit (and the complexities of trade) are proving that even for billionaires, it is risky to stay in the UK. This is because, as they now say themselves any competitive advantage from the U.K.’s decision to leave the EU is heavily diminished. Both Dyson and Ratcliffe were vocal in supporting Brexit – but when the reality of it became clearer – they jumped ship as both have now abandoned plans to build in Britain (READ MORE).

The Withdrawal Method: The swivel-eyed fanatics of the ERG are gearing up for yet another fight with Boris Johnson. This time they are pressurising the PM to fully and selectively renege on any Withdrawal Agreement clauses if they don’t get the deal they want and that Britain should abandon the WA in its entirety on the basis that it has the mandate to do so. Sir Bernard Jenkin, chair of the ERG steering group officially stated that “I hope it is not necessary, but if it is the only way to achieve UK prosperity and the kind of sovereign independence which is the democratic right of any nation recognised under the UN charter, then so be it.” The ERG should be mindful that a majority in government does not give them an automatic mandate if electors were duped. What the electorate voted for was to end the Brexit nightmare and get it done – with a deal that was promoted by Boris Johnson and fully supported by the ERG (source). In addition, the ERG are effectively promoting Scotland’s position over independence.

Brexit Bullshit Update. https://truepublica.org.uk/united-kingdom/weekly-news-review-august-30th-sept-5th/

Propaganda: Speaking to the Financial Times, Julian Jessop – fellow at the think-tank the Institute of Economic Affairs that so heavily pushed for a hard Brexit (that also got caught flogging access for US lobbyists to Brexit negotiating MP’s) – said: “Any costs from a change in our relationship with the EU are likely to be trivial compared to the swings in GDP due to coronavirus, as well as potentially being smaller during the crisis than they would have been otherwise” (source). You’ll be hearing a lot of this in the coming months – that the C19 crisis will be massively more expensive to the economy than Brexit. It will in the short run but not in the long run, as Brexit has already been calculated by the government itself to cost significantly more over 15 years. What the IEA is pushing is yet more propaganda to save the ideology of Brexit.

Leaked: Border trade plans for 1 January are ‘unmanageable’, a leaked government document admits. A memo warns of ‘critical gaps’ in new IT systems – with just four months to go to the end of the transition (source). In addition, the government has just changed the law to grant emergency planning permission for it to build “temporary” [for up to 5 years] no trade deal Brexit lorry parks in no less 29 council areas. It cites no space for infrastructure and is urgently needed by year-end. If you think that the pandemic was badly managed – Brexit and all of its complexities will be a real problem (source)

What Brexit?: The Institute for Government made this statement two weeks ago – “The government will not be able to conclude a large number of trade agreements at speed and maintain its much-prized regulatory autonomy after Brexit.” The report says prospective trading partners are likely to tell the UK to change its standards (downwards) if it wants a trade deal. “The importance of trade deals as a ‘prize of Brexit’ makes the UK particularly vulnerable to such pressure. But even though it is now negotiating four new trade agreements and 18 ‘rollovers’ of existing EU deals (not to mention a comprehensive agreement with the EU itself), the government still lacks a firmly agreed position on many of the issues it will face.” In other words – the Brexiteers still don’t know what Brexit is with 17 weeks to go – tick, tock… (READ MORE).

Standing alone: It is a matter of fact that Britain could soon end up with a no-deal Brexit on January 1st. If that happens, the UK will stand alone as the only country in the world that has no trade deal with its nearest neighbours, excepting the odd failed state here and there of course (source). The UK is unable to make a trade deal with the three biggest trading economies in the world namely the EU, China and USA because they have different trading standards. So, you have to pick one if you want to trade. The EU is by far the easiest, its the biggest and we’re already in it. When the difficulties of a no-deal Brexit become apparent (source), the rejoin movement will have all the evidence they need to crush the Brexit movement – but the EU will not consider re-entry for decades. Where does that leave Britain – except more divided and isolated.

Doomed: If a “typical” free trade agreement is struck with Brussels, the Office for Budget Responsibility predicted a 5.2 per cent loss of potential GDP over the next 15 years after Brexit. This is in addition to the already lost 2 per cent of output since the 2016 referendum. The OBR added that higher trade barriers would mean imports and exports will be roughly 15 per cent lower after ten years, while overall productivity – already a problem in the UK – would also be lower. A study by the United Nations earlier this year predicted that, without a trade deal, the UK’s post-Brexit exports could decline by an eye-watering 14 per cent (source). All that – without Covid-19 factored in.

Hypocrite: Billionaire Brexiteer Jim Ratcliffe – the boss of Ineos Automotive – is now considering scrapping plans to build a car plant in Wales, and is reportedly looking to buy a factory in France instead. Ratcliffe, who moved to Monaco last year, presumably to escape Brexit Britain, said: “we have an obligation to do what is right for the business.” Wait, what – I hear you say. Carwyn Jones, the former Welsh first minister who represents Bridgend, rightly suggested that “Brexit-backing businesses held extra responsibility to invest in the UK” and not dash off to better and bigger markets across the channel (source).

Brexit Bullshit Update: https://truepublica.org.uk/united-kingdom/weekly-news-review-23-29th-august/

EU Gives Up: In an extremely serious turn of events, Germany has scrapped plans to discuss Brexit at a high-level diplomatic meeting next week because there has not been “any tangible progress” in talks, as Brussels laments a “completely wasted” summer. EU officials now believe the UK government is prepared to risk a no-deal exit when the transition period comes to an end on 31 December and will try to pin the blame on Brussels if talks fail. The EU has now, after all this time, all but given up and are walking away from the table (source).

Another Lorry Park: Several sites across Hull have been identified to hold Britain’s fifth Brexit ‘lorry park’ to deal with congestion caused by the UK’s exit from the EU. Although the official site is yet to be named publicly, there are rumours it could be built in the Humber Bridge car park. This comes as four sites in Kent have been mapped out to host lorry parks aimed at easing traffic travelling through Dover port much to the annoyance of the Brexit backing voters in Kent (source).

No deal more likely: Negotiators have continued to meet over the summer break, where the seventh round of talks between the EU and UK over post-Brexit trade relations resumed last Tuesday. The UK says that the remaining negotiating rounds will seek to “plug the gaps”. EU negotiators said the opposite. Barnier repeated that an agreement was “unlikely”, adding that he was “disappointed, concerned and surprised” by the UK’s rigid stance. “I simply do not understand why we are wasting valuable time,” Barnier told reporters.

City not Ready: 94% of senior managers at London’s largest finance firms – including banks, asset managers, insurance firms and fintech businesses – said they still had work to do “to remain operational” in the event of a no-deal Brexit, and that they were simply not ready, according to a poll conducted by consulting firm EY. John Liver, a UK financial services partner at EY, said Brexit uncertainty was now “causing increasing concern across the City” and was becoming “increasingly critical” (source).

Cornwall – one of the poorest parts of the UK, has been among the biggest recipients of financial support from Brussels in the past twenty years. Cornwall, who overwhelmingly voted for Brexit, now wants the government to stump up £700 million to make up for the EU funding it is set to lose after Brexit (source). Andrew McRae – an English professor at the University of Exeter – said: “What a desperately sad story this is. All those Brexit myths of British greatness somehow overlooked the fact that the UK has some of the poorest regions in Europe, that gained considerably from EU support. Good luck getting that from the Tories” (source).

Cost of Brexit: It is almost impossible to calculate but If you estimate what the UK will have paid in net contributions to the EU by 2020, using the latest figures from the Office for Budget Responsibility on the financial settlement with the EU, then it comes to around £222 billion in real terms. But that is the total cost over 47 years (including rebates). Bloomberg Economics puts the cost of Brexit at £170bn as at January this year and £200bn by the year-end, which only covers four and half years (source).

What’s the point: Britain is attempting to strengthen its weak negotiating position by waving its £2.2trillion economy in front of America and the EU in the hope that one blinks before the other. The reality is that a real trade deal with the USA is impossible to sign in 2020 (for all sorts of reasons) and the EU deal will be Theresa May’s deal or no deal – both of which are terrible options. The least worst deal is May’s deal with the Johnson difference being the Irish backstop replaced with the Northern Ireland Protocol, which means Britain is in the same trading position as it was before Brexit, but has no influence in the EU (source). This then leads to the question – why bother in the first place?

Brexit Bullshit Update https://truepublica.org.uk/united-kingdom/weekly-news-review-16-22-august/

Deal or No-Deal – You Choose: An EU official has urged Boris Johnson to take the ‘unique and highly attractive’ offer it has made to the UK which it says has never been offered to any country before. The deal offers quota-free and duty-free access for goods to the single market”. But in the interest of “fair competition,” the UK must accept the level playing field demand and EU Court of Justice for trade disputes as its red-line to tie up loose ends and agree a deal. “For the EU it is not negotiable that the ECJ is the only institution that is allowed to interpret EU law.” Brexit hard-liners won’t accept this even though it will greatly soften Britain’s economic woes as it heads for the much-reported car-crash no deal come January 1st 2021 (READ MORE).

UK Pressure Pot: Related to the above – EU officials have taken note of recent setbacks in UK trade talks with the USA and Japan, as well as comments from New Zealand’s deputy PM that UK trade negotiators are not “match fit.” “The U.K. desperately needs this deal,” an EU official closely involved in the talks says. “If the clock is ticking, reality will start to sink in, in London … Surely the pandemic and the lack of trade alternatives must lead to some reason in London?” One thing the EU negotiators can be sure of though is that ‘reason’, logic or common sense is spread quite thin in Westminster these days.

Johnson’s dead body: “There will be no border down the Irish Sea – over my dead body” lied Boris Johnson, yet again. It was in May this year when Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove told Parliament there would be additional controls on goods moving between Britain and Northern Ireland once the Brexit transition period ends this year (source). To that end – the Government has insisted a £355 million package to help Northern Ireland’s businesses navigate Brexit red tape is not an admission of an Irish Sea border – which it is (source). In May this year – the UK government confirmed it will construct three border posts at Northern Irish ports. This is known to every country on planet earth as … a border (source).

Bannon and Brexit: The US Senate Intelligence Committee has sent a bipartisan letter to the Justice Department asking federal prosecutors to investigate Stephen K. Bannon, a former Trump confidant, for potentially lying to lawmakers during its investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Steve Bannon advised Nigel Farage (source), Boris Johnson (source), Vote Leave (source) along with tactics and strategies for Brexit (source). The UK’s Russia Report was a whitewash when it came to reporting on Brexit as MI5 decided it wasn’t important enough to bother (source) (READ MORE).

Food prices: The Grocer Magazine is concerned about the inevitability of rising food prices as a direct result of Brexit. It rightly asks the basic question – how are billions in additional tariffs, taxes and administration costs going to be paid for if, in the end, it’s not the consumer? “It’s very concerning that with less than five months to go there are still so few discussions between retailers and suppliers on how the burden of customs and tariffs will be shared? (source). Customs bills alone are expected to cost £7bn each year with reduced access to cheap European labour and increased transport costs also needing to be factored in. Price hikes are the harsh reality of leaving the EU” the trade body complained (source). Just for info – 7 billion divided by the number of households in Britain puts another £300 a year on the average food bill.

Science Reversal: Nobel prize-winning scientist, Sir Paul Nurse lays out a dire future for Brexit Britain in the specialist but important scientific arena. “I meet scientific colleagues around the world and they just think that the UK has turned away from collaborative science by looking back on an imperial history that no longer exists. It’s just very sentimental. And we’ve taken a leap several decades into the past” (READ MORE).

Big mouth BJ: Yes, it’s Johnson’s big mouth again that means trade deals in Africa have basically ended up being a non-starter. Having played down slavery and recommended a new form of colonialism for the continent, Johnson wrote in the Spectator (source) that: “The best fate for Africa would be if the old colonial powers, or their citizens, scrambled once again in her direction; on the understanding that this time they will not be asked to feel guilty.” The other fact that has not gone unnoticed in Africa is that since the funeral of Nelson Mandela in 2013, there has been just one visit by a UK prime minister to sub-Saharan Africa – and that was a cursory trip by Theresa May in 2018. In the meantime, Africa’s main trade partner in goods is … the EU. That trade deal runs an almost zero trade deficit, is well balanced for both parties and worth 300 billion Euros per year (source).
