By way of explanation. The term 'home business' consists of two words. 'Business' is the second one; it's there to qualify and support the word 'home' and all that goes with it - and not vice versa. Consequently, we also list below, items which are of interest and value to the home. Whether in its context as an office or as a part of your family and lifestyle but always directed at the improved prospects and enjoyment that running a business from home, in its entirety, can bring.

For a current, multi-part overview of starting and running a business from home, go here: http://www.homebusiness.org.uk/features.htm

'100,000' may die due to heating costs. http://money.aol.co.uk/2015/02/27/100-000-may-die-due-to-heating-costs/ Who needs IS (Israeli Settlers) when you've got a British government? Perhaps the country's hate-preaching, criminal media might find time to shoe-horn this barbaric catastrophe into its Israeli-American terrorist propaganda somewhere? It could help warn tradesmen to take along portable heating whenever they go to jobs in old folks' homes; and then wonder if there will be enough money in the tin to get paid. (Not that poverty in 'Bongo Bongoland' Britain is just an old persons' thing.)

Guide to Universal Credit and the self-employed. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/universal-credit-and-self-employment-quick-guide The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has published a quick guide to claiming Universal Credit as a self-employed person. Universal Credit replaces Housing Benefit, Tax Credits and other benefits for people on low incomes and is being introduced in stages across the UK. Anyone making a claim for Universal Credit who is already self-employed must attend a Gateway Interview to assess whether or not they are in 'gainful' self-employment. This means that their trade or occupation is their main form of employment, is well-organised, and carried out regularly with a view to making a profit. Universal Credit payments are calculated on the basis of an assumed minimum level of earnings (the minimum income floor), unless the self-employed person has been trading for under 12 months, in which case payments will be calculated on the person's earnings and treated as if they were from PAYE employment.

18.02.2015: New business start-up initiative announced. http://www.nationalenterprisenetwork.org/news/2015/02/government-launch-initiative-support-business-start/ A new initiative to provide intensive support to start up firms in England has been announced by the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg. The Start and Grow initiative, will be funded for two years via the Regional Growth Fund. The initiative will provide mentoring, business skills training, access to finance, and one-to-one advice for new firms that have ambitions to grow and create employment, but which are based in areas where business start-up levels are traditionally low. The initiative will be delivered by the Cavendish Consortium, which comprises six enterprise agencies, along with the National Enterprise Network. The Consortium has already helped create 10,000 jobs over the last three years under the current Ready for Business programme. (EnterpriseQuest)

One is left wondering why it is necessary for the Government to launch yet another 'business start-up initiative' when (according to the Government) all its other 'business start-up initiatives' have been such resounding successes?

LEPs urged to improve business support. http://www.fsb.org.uk/News.aspx?loc=pressroom&rec=8892 A report by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has called on Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) to take the lead in improving the way local business support is provided in order to boost small business growth. While the report recognises LEPs' role as facilitators of targeted business support, it highlights ways in which current support programmes are often duplicated, fragmented and ineffective. Basing its recommendations on evidence provided by the Enterprise Research Centre (ERC), the report recommends that LEPs work with the recently established Growth Hubs, and provide better local co-ordination of business support. A robust evaluation of business support programmes to ensure their effectiveness is also recommended in the report. (EnterpriseQuest)

New guidance published on 'native' advertising. http://www.iabuk.net/about/press/archive/iab-launches-guidelines-to-provide-greater-transparency-in-native-digital New guidelines have been published by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), to help firms provide more clarity for consumers when 'native' advertising techniques are used. The guidelines relate to digital marketing content which is designed to look and feel like editorial content. Key issues covered by the guidelines include using visual clues to aid with differentiation between marketing and editorial content, using labels to demonstrate that a commercial arrangement is in place, and ensuring that all marketing complies with UK consumer protection laws and advertising rules. The guidelines are designed to help firms meet the UK advertising industry's CAP code, which is enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). A second set of guidelines, focusing on online advertorial and sponsored content, is due to be published in Q2 of 2015. (EnterpriseQuest)

Self-employed facing mortgage difficulties. http://www.cityam.com/208841/tight-mortgage-rules-squeeze-old-and-self-employed Tougher rules on lending are making it more difficult for self-employed workers to secure a mortgage, according to the Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association (ILMA). In a survey carried out by the ILMA, seven in ten mortgage brokers (71%) agreed that tougher assessments of customers' income and expenditure were having an impact on lending, while 56% said that increased requirements for evidence were having an effect. In addition 84% said they had been unable to help a customer to obtain a mortgage in the last six months because of the tougher assessments, up from 78% in July 2014. Despite this, around half of brokers said they believed that overall mortgage market conditions were improving, and only 23% said they felt conditions were getting worse. (EnterpriseQuest)

Report finds creative freelancers prospering. http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/News-and-Events/News/Pages/Brighton-Fuse-Freelancer-Report.aspx The Brighton Fuse Freelancer Report has revealed that freelancers in the Creative-Digital-IT (CDIT) sector achieve good incomes and prefer to be self-employed. This contrasts with the view that self-employment is insecure, poorly paid and the choice of last resort. According to the report, freelancers surveyed in the CDIT cluster in Brighton earn on average almost £43,000 per year, and 94% prefer self-employment to being employed. Freelancers with a 'creative-digital fusion' in their work were the highest earners. Over 80% of freelancers engage in innovation and a quarter said that international revenue was important to them. Over 40% have already set up limited companies, while many others intend to start firms and employ staff in future. (EnterpriseQuest)

Increased debt recovery court fees announced. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/enhanced-court-fees-the-
government-response-to-part-2-of-the-consultation-on-reform-of-court-fees
Significant increases to court fees have been announced by the Ministry of Justice, in a move which could negatively impact small firms. From April 2015, the fee to issue proceedings to recover more than £10,000 will increase to 5% of the sum claimed, with the maximum fee being capped at £10,000. For claims of £10,000 or less, the fees will remain at their current rates. The Lord Chief Justice has argued that the increased fees will impact negatively on small firm claimants attending court in person, as they would be required to pay the fees up front. Self-employed status rules to be investigated. http://www.cipd.co.uk/pm/peoplemanagement/b/weblog/archive/
2015/01/23/cable-pledges-to-investigate-self-employed-status.aspx
Business Secretary Vince Cable has pledged to investigate the practice of firms inappropriately contracting workers on self-employed status. This follows the recent case in which over 1,000 self-employed drivers working for City Link didn't receive redundancy pay or back pay when the firm went into administration. The Government will review the wider implications for self-employed individuals and firms who use this type of contractual arrangement. Announcing the investigation, Vince Cable said: "There are people in the category who are genuinely entrepreneurial. But many are in a very precarious situation, working for one employer, and that degrades their employment... we have got a very good entrepreneurial culture, but there is a dark side to that too." (EnterpriseQuest)

Stricter self-employed status rules have been mooted for quite some time now but the problem this Government has in so doing, is that it faces a big hole being blown in the much-trumpeted figures for its erstaz armies of 'entrepreneurs'. As just implied by the Business Secretary himself.

Although it is noted that none of the restaurants are Muslim-owned which means that the appearance of 'quenelles' will NOT prompt raids by the CRS, dozens of helicopters and an aircraft carrier letting off thousands of rounds of ammunition, killing all the diners, arresting frightened passers-by before frog-marching them in front of an emergency kangaroo court to receive three year jail sentences for protesting at being wounded.
