By way of explanation. The term 'home business' consists of two words. 'Business' is the second one; it's there to qualify and support the word 'home' and all that goes with it - and not vice versa. Consequently, we also list below, items which are of interest and value to the home. Whether in its context as an office or as a part of your family and lifestyle but always directed at the improved prospects and enjoyment that running a business from home, in its entirety, can bring.

For a current, multi-part overview of starting and running a business from home, go here: http://www.homebusiness.org.uk/features.htm

So how are they managed in 'digital detox' form? This reminds me of a visit I made many years ago to a small 'eco' housing development, also in Wales, built with the home office/homeworker/home business in mind. I failed to see then, just as I do with this home, what was so different about the construction that it warranted such an inflated price tag. If you want a real 'off grid', 'digital detox' house and not just something designed to appeal to a clueless city dweller armed with a dummyphone, then you need look no further than many rural areas of France where around 45,000 euros should easily buy you 'the good life' with a decent bit of land included.

After that, all you will need are the necessary lifestyle skills to make a success of it all. Something which city dwellers armed with dummyphones are also unlikely to have.

Self-employed collaborate to tackle challenges. http://www.fsb.org.uk/media-centre/press-releases/collaboration-no-longer-a-dirty-word-for-self-employed-as-they-look-to-fill-gaps-left-by-government The self-employed are pooling their resources and collaborating more in order to fill the gaps left by government, according to a joint report by FSB and the RSA. The report, 'The Self-Organising Self-Employed', has revealed that self-employed workers are collaborating on and supporting a range of initiatives that provide financial support and economic security to the self-employed. According to the RSA and FSB, successive governments have failed to address the challenges facing the self-employed, and "it has been left to the self-employed to try and fill the gap through innovative ideas such as cooperative models of savings and collective insurance models". (EnterpriseQuest)

Whether voluntarily or by design, the self-employed are notorious for their lack of collaboration, no matter how beneficial it might be. Which is what successive governments have counted on for generations and despite what this report suggests, that ain't going to change any time soon. And especially since social media has come along to pretend to be of use. Which it is, of course. To scammers, terrorists, nutters and Bob Hopers.

More consumers in disputes with European traders. https://www.tradingstandards.uk/news-policy/news-room/2017/more-uk-consumers-ask-the-uk-european-consumer-centre-for-help The UK European Consumer Centre (ECC) has recorded an 18.2% rise from 2015 to 2016 in the number of consumers asking for advice and support about contract disputes. The UK ECC helps consumers settle disputes with traders in other European countries. It received the largest number of complaints from consumers about transport, recreation and culture, and restaurants, hotels and accommodation. According to the UK ECC, a rise in the number of Britons visiting Europe for business and leisure is behind the growth in the number of consumers asking for support. (EnterpriseQuest)

Interest rate rise would see firms struggle. http://www.r3.org.uk/index.cfm?page=1114&&element=30048&refpage=1008 One in 25 UK firms would have been unable to repay their debts in February 2017 if interest rates increased slightly, according to research published by insolvency and restructuring trade body R3. This is the first time the number of firms at risk from even a small rise in interest rates increased since 2014. Andrew Tate, spokesperson for R3, said: "UK firms have faced a challenging 2016 and early 2017: the sharp fall in the pound has made things difficult for importers, while a rising National Living Wage and the roll-out of pensions auto-enrolment have added to businesses' running costs." 13.06.2017: Business organisations react to General Election result. Business organisations have called for political stability and the formation of a functioning Government, following the General Election on 8 June 2017 which resulted in a hung Parliament.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) National Chairman Mike Cherry said: "In the coming hours and days, business needs immediate reassurance from the government that emerges about how it will protect the economy from any political turmoil."

FSB and the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) also called for a delay to Brexit negotiations to ensure that the UK goes into the talks from a position of strength.

BCC Director General Dr Adam Marshall said: "No business would walk into a negotiation without clear objectives, an agreed starting position, and a strong negotiating team. It is hard to see how Brexit negotiations could begin without answers on these important questions."

The Forum of Private Business (FPB) said the new Government, when it forms, must not ignore the economic contribution of small businesses. FPB Chief Executive Ian Cass said: "With such a divisive split in the UK political scene, it is time for business to take control of the Country's future. Not just big business with their sights purely on shareholder value, but small businesses who live and breathe common sense survival in a changing world."

New rules to make it harder for firms to claim debt from individuals. A Pre-Action Protocol (PAP) for debt claims comes into effect on 1 October 2017 and commercial law firm EMW is warning that this may make it more difficult for businesses to recover debts from individuals. The Ministry of Justice's PAP includes an extension of the maximum time that debtors have to respond to a letter of debt claim from 21 days to 31 days. Individuals will be given a further 14 days of grace if they fail to pay their debt and, as a result, will have twice as long to pay a debt before creditors are able to take them to court.

Food and drink exports reach record high. http://www.foodmanufacture.co.uk/Business-News/Food-and-drink-exports-reach-record-high-levels The Food and Drink Federation has revealed that the value of UK food and drink exports reached a record high of £4.9 billion during the first three months of 2017, largely due to overseas sales of whisky, salmon and chocolate. This represents an increase of 8.3% on the value of UK food and drink exports in the corresponding period of 2016.

The EU accounted for almost two thirds (65%) of UK food and drink exports in Q1 2017. However, the value of non-EU exports increased by 9.4% from Q1 2016 to Q1 2017, while the value of EU exports increased by 7.4% over the same period. (EnterpriseQuest)

Food manufacturers face skills shortage. http://www.foodnavigator.com/Policy/UK-food-industry-faces-labour-shortfall-as-Brexit-fallout-gathers-pace According to a paper from the Food Research Collaboration, food manufacturers in the UK are facing a shortage of skilled labour due to the impact of Brexit and the fact that fewer young people are choosing a career in the sector. Almost a third of the UK food and drink manufacturing workforce are EU nationals and the industry also needs to recruit 140,000 new workers by 2024 to replace retirees. The paper sets out a number of recommendations to address the growing skills and labour shortages. These include continued access to EU workers and raising awareness of the range of manufacturing careers available to young people. (EnterpriseQuest)

06.06.2017: Hike in insurance tax takes effect. https://www.biba.org.uk/press-releases/millions-hit-insurance-tax-hike/ An increase in the rate of insurance premium tax (IPT) may make insurance more expensive for millions of individuals and firms, the British Insurance Brokers’ Association has warned. The rate of IPT was increased from 10% to 12% on 1 June 2017. IPT is charged as a percentage of the insurance premium. This means that the increases will have the greatest effect on policyholders who already pay the most for cover. Mike Cherry, National Chairman of the FSB, said: "If insurance premiums continue to increase, small business take-up of insurance will begin to dip, and it will be those most at risk that will be affected." This follows a report claiming most of the 25,000 businesses that have lost their small business rates relief had not received any help from their local authority. DCLG has also encouraged local authorities to contact ratepayers who are eligible for relief as soon as possible. (EnterpriseQuest)
